Triclosan is a chemical found in many mainstream household products, toothpastes and hand sanitisers. In 2017, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) banned the use of triclosan in skin care products, as studies showed it wasn’t actually effective in cleansing skin. It was originally introduced in the 1960’s as a surgical cleanser in hospitals. Since then, it has been introduced into domestic products because of its anti-bacterial properties. But triclosan is not just ineffective, it is also dangerous. Research shows that triclosan is linked to many negative effects on our health, such as abnormal hormone growth, weakening of the immune system and uncontrolled developmental growth. Research also shows that children exposed to products containing triclosan had a higher chance of developing allergies such as asthma and eczema.
